Evidence for non-existential readings of locative indefinites

چکیده
While (1) only requires that there exists a gas station nearby, the prominent interpretation of (2) is that all gas stations are far away. We examine two accounts of this kind of contrast. Under one possible explanation, far from decomposes into its negated antonym (henceforth Implicit Negation, or IN, cf. in another context Heim [1]). Under an alternative account, indefinites denote properties which are associated with eigenspaces – the spatial regions inhabited by the entities in the extension of the property (Property Eigenspace Hypothesis, or PEH, see [3,4]). We present new evidence, with experimental support, for the PEH and against IN: sentences containing indefinites with projective locatives like left of, south of have a salient false interpretation also in situations where the existential reading is true. IN cannot explain these interpretations, whereas they are directly predicted by the PEH. Our results imply that indefinites uniformly denote properties, and only indirectly, through derivational ambiguity, existential quantifiers. Contrasts as in (1)-(2) show that locative indefinites may give rise to a salient non-existential and a less salient existential interpretation. However, this is so only for far from in (2) but not for close to in (1). Another example [3,4] is the contrast between (3) and (4), where (3) only requires that Fido be inside of some doghouse, but (4)’s prominent interpretation is that Fido is outside of all doghouses:

Far From Obvious: the Semantics of Locative Indefinites
Simple locative sentences show a variety of pseudo-quantificational interpretations. Some locatives give the impression of universal quantification over parts of objects, others involve existential quantification, and yet others cannot be characterized by either of these quantificational terms. This behavior is explained by virtually all semantic theories of locatives. What has not been previou...
متن کاملScopal Independence: On Branching & Wide Scope Readings of Indefinites & Disjunctions1
Hintikka claimed in the 1970s that indefinites and disjunctions give rise to 'branching readings' that can only be handled by a 'game-theoretic' semantics as expressive as a logic with quantification over Skolem functions. Due to empirical and methodological difficulties, the issue was left unresolved in the linguistics literature. Independently, however, it was discovered in the 1980s that, co...
متن کاملNon-Existential Indefinites and Semantic Incorporation of PP Complements
This paper studies some newly observed phenomena with indefinite descriptions when they appear as complements of prepositional phrases (PPs). We show that in many such cases the indefinite does not receive the traditional existential interpretation, and its quantificational force is sensitive to the identity of the preposition. Such cases of quantificational variability are explained by elabora...
متن کاملNon-Existential Indefinites and Semantic Incorporation of PP Complements
Indefinites that appear as complements in prepositional phrases show some systematic variations in their interpretation, which to the best of our knowledge have not been observed before. Consider the contrasts between the following pairs: (1) a. The house is close to a lake. b. The house is far from a lake. (2) a. The house is less than/at most 20m from a lake. b. The house is more than/at leas...
متن کاملLocating Sets: Spatial Semantics of Indefinites and Collective Descriptions
This paper addresses systematic variations in the interpretation of indefinites and plurals when appearing within prepositional phrases and other spatial expressions. We show that these variations are explained when spatial processes in semantics locate the sets associated with properties and other setbased denotations of nominals. Starting with spatial indefinites we consider contrasts like th...
